The Rectorate of the University of Malaga has hosted this Friday the presentation of the Cancer Research Center, an attractive project that is endorsed by the Board, the City Council and the UMA. The entity aims to generate new drugs and develop new technologies to treat the disease. “It could become one of the most important cancer research centers in Spain,” said Juanma Moreno, President of the Andalusian Government.
Emilia Alba, Director of Oncology at the Clinic and Carlos Haya, has insisted on the importance of this future monographic center for cancer research. “First of all because of the incidence and mortality of cancer. According to Alba, “the important thing is to attract good talent.” “You have to be agile and have the necessary institutional tools to do so. This institution could be an effective center for attracting talent,” stressed the oncologist, who spoke of Malaga as a city with magnificent communications that has caught a wave of innovation. “Let’s see if we’re lucky to be hooked on a wave of health-related innovation“, has commented.
Before ending her speech, Alba wanted to talk about two milestones in the city in terms of research: the oncology departments of the Regional Hospital and the Clinic were merged. “They had 28 people hired. Today there are 76. One million euros was allocated to clinical trials. Now the investment is five million,” he specified.
Also opened in 2014 the Malagueña Association for Oncology Research. “Since it was set up in 2014, with the City Council’s philanthropic effort, almost 2,000 people have been sequenced, of which between 7% and 8% have found a specific medicine to treat,” he detailed.
