“Kei is irreplaceable for me. For us, marriage is a necessary decision”

We rewind to 2021. Mako, 31, and Kei Komuro, 31, tied the knot in a simple, no-frills ceremony – dubbed “the saddest wedding of all time” by some media outlets – and the two face the press. She with a tight bun, a pearl necklace and a light blue suit. He had his hair combed and he was wearing a suit and tie. Mako and Kei apologize to the Japanese people for any “inconvenience” their relationship has caused in a function room they paid for themselves. Because: Mako is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino (57) and his wife, Crown Princess Kiko (56). Because she chose a commoner as a princess, she had to resign from the imperial family after the wedding and lost her royal title. In addition, the couple was denied the traditional ceremony at the imperial court. Mako makes it clear to the assembled press: “Kei is irreplaceable for me. For us, marriage is a necessary decision to live and to cherish our hearts.”

Mako of Japan voluntarily waived one million euros

In fact, under Japanese law, a princess who loses her status through marriage is entitled to a payout from the government. In the case of ex-princess Mako, this would have been around 1.1 million euros. But Mako voluntarily renounced it – probably also because of this, so as not to give the impression that the debts of the Komuro family, which was in financial difficulties, would be paid off with it. The message of Mako’s engagement to Kei had previously drawn negative media coverage as well as street protests. This did not leave the then princess unscathed: Shortly before the marriage, the court officials announced that Mako had developed post-traumatic stress disorder.
