István Tarlós Endorses Alexandra Szentkirályi as Fidesz Mayoral Candidate for Budapest Municipal Election

István Tarlós is very happy that Alexandra Szentkirályi will be Fidesz’s mayoral candidate in the municipal election on June 9. “At some point, I invented him, but now he is a Fidesz candidate, it’s a different matter whether I’m happy for him, and it seems that the leaders of Fidesz and I were on the same page,” said the former mayor of Budapest in the For index in his interview.

According to Tarlós, Szentkirályi has the best lobbying power in terms of the interests of Budapest, and according to him, he is “the most knowledgeable about the entire breadth of the municipal government spectrum”. The former mayor is also counting on the candidacy of Dávid Vitézy, and said that he would consider it a discredited step if he did not accept the nomination of the LMP.

“Vitézy attacks aggressively, Gergely Karácsony constantly wails. Vitézy basically doesn’t know anything except traffic, which in this context should not be ignored”

– said Tarlós, who would like to help Szentkirályi’s campaign. “In the place of Alexandra Szentkirályi, I would mainly come forward with positive messages and things to say,” he added.

The conflict between Dávid Vitézy and István Tarlós dates back to the 2010s. Vitézy became the founding CEO of the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) in 2010 at the very young age of 25. As an agile leader, he did a lot for the development of the transport company, and after a while he also had conflicts with Tarlós. Tarlós saw him as a potential rival, and the conflict reached such a point that in 2014 he finally fired Vitézy from the head of BKK. Tarlós was then ironically “a young, repressed genius and one-man mastermind legend” called itwith whom, according to him, “it is impossible to work with because of his personality”.

In addition, Fidesz does not need a lot of time to build its Szentkirály mayor candidate, since almost everyone in Budapest knows the government spokesman, and he will not be a stranger to the world of local government: he was a representative of the capital between 2010 and 2014, and then worked as the deputy mayor of Tarlós until 2019.
