Majority in intensive care under 50 years

That the coronavirus mainly affects old people is not clear from the intensive care of hospitals. The majority of patients there are under fifty.

Although so far only the elderly in the Netherlands have died from the virus, there are plenty of younger people who are severely affected. This is evident if you look at the 96 people who are currently in IC as a result of the coronavirus.

“At the moment we also see many younger people under the age of fifty in the ICU,” Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC) told RTL News.

Carnival

Gommers has a logical explanation for this. “I think that is because of the outbreak during carnival, a party that is mainly celebrated by younger people. A small percentage of them have become seriously ill, which we now find on the ICs. “

Many patients in intensive care are on mechanical ventilation, which goes through a tube in their windpipe. “We don’t know exactly why. It has something to do with their immune system going too far. They receive nothing of the ventilation. Just like during an operation, the patients were put into a deep sleep, “says Gommers.

59 years

So far, 24 people in the Netherlands have died from the coronavirus. The youngest of these was 59 years old.
