Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Oklahoma City Area; More Aftershocks Expected

Oklahoma City Area Hit by Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake and Aftershocks

The Oklahoma City area was struck by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake late Friday, followed by a series of aftershocks, creating concerns and prompting readiness for possible further seismic activity. According to the Oklahoma Geological Survey, the quake occurred around 11:24 p.m. local time near Prague, located approximately 63 miles east of Oklahoma City. It was recorded to have a depth just under 2 miles. Additionally, smaller earthquakes, with magnitudes as large as 3.5, were also reported in the area.

Previous Earthquake and Expected Aftershocks

State Seismologist Jake Walter acknowledges the previous significant earthquake that occurred in Prague in 2011, which measured at a magnitude of 5.7. Walter mentioned through a social media post his expectation of more aftershocks in the coming days, emphasizing the connectivity of the recent 5.1 quake to the earlier event. This indicates a complex tectonic activity in the area.

Extent of Earthquake Felt

Reports from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reveal that the impact of the earthquake stretched far beyond the immediate Oklahoma vicinity. It affected regions including Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and areas across state lines into Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, as well as parts of Texas. Notably, the USGS also mentions that earthquakes occurring east of the Rockies, while less frequent, tend to have a wider range of felt effects.

Continued Earthquake Occurrences

In a series of quakes that have rattled the region nearby the Northeast Edmond Gas and Oil Field, an earthquake with a 4.1 magnitude and a depth of 4.1 miles shook the Oklahoma City area in mid-January. Continuing seismic activities in Oklahoma have raised concerns about the potential causes behind the surge in earthquakes. Experts suggest a substantial link to human activities, particularly in relation to oil and natural gas production.
