Lucid recently launched the Air Sapphire, the most powerful version of Lucid’s electric model, with 1,234 hp on active power, which promised to surpass the Tesla Model S Plaid in almost every department, including the Track Pack version. Now, once the first series cars have been produced and are on their way to the first customers, Lucid has handed a copy to Ben Collins, the racing driver who played the role of Stig in the famous show Top Gear once upon a time.
He did a complete tour on the Sonoma Raceway circuit in the USA, commenting in the manner of a professional driver on everything that happens in the car. And it seems that the people from Lucid made sure that the whole car is not only strong, but also extraordinarily balanced, and capable of braking and grip in all conditions.
We mention this because the Tesla Model S Plaid has long been criticized for high power but weak brakes, and only the Track Pack edition came to solve these problems. Lucid, however, in its deeper engineering approach, did all these things from scratch.
Even more impressive, however, is the announcement that followed the video below, namely the one in which the Lucid Air Sapphire managed to clock 8.989 seconds in the 1/4 mile on a drag racing circuit, also in the hands of Ben Collins.
And this figure makes the Lucid Air Sapphire one of the fastest cars in the world in this respect, surpassing the time of 9.23 seconds, marked by the Tesla Model S Plaid. And this victory is a symbolic one, in which Lucid succeeds in what it failed to do in previous years — namely, to overtake the most powerful versions and models of Tesla. It shows, therefore, a nice intensification of the competition between the two American producers!
By the way, after 8.989 seconds from the standing start, when he crossed the finish line, that Lucid was 255 km/h! So, the acceleration from 0 to 200 km/h and less than this time.
