Low Vaccination Rates for Minors in Baja California Sur: Urgent Call to Action for Parents

La Paz, Baja California Sur.- In the state of Baja California Sur, less than 30 percent of minors in the entity are vaccinated.

According to the most recent statistics from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), it has been identified that a total of 210,226 boys and girls between the ages of 0 and 15 reside in our entity. This demographic makes up a substantial portion of the population vulnerable to seasonal influenza.

However, the director of the Francisco Cardoso Carballo Health Center, Carlos Iván Tirado Murillo, warned about a worrying delay in the vaccination of minors against this disease.

He explained that during the month of November, the first dose of the vaccine was applied to a total of 20 children from 6 to 11 months, 9 children from 12 to 23 months, 36 children from 23 to 35 months, 47 children from 36 to 47 months and 3 children from 48 to 59 months.

“It is really a very low number that should be higher, considering that these children are part of the population most vulnerable to contracting the disease,” he commented.

In contrast, the population aged 60 or older has received around 498 vaccines, a figure initially intended for minors. Carlos Tirado pointed out that the main barrier for parents to take their children to be vaccinated is lack of time, especially during the school period.

For this reason, it urgently calls on parents to take advantage of the holidays, since the health center will continue with vaccination days from Monday to Sunday, with extended hours from 8 in the morning to 8 at night.

He also reported that various health centers will operate with specific hours to guarantee service coverage. The Calandrio Unit will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Lázaro Cárdenas will serve in the morning shift, the 8 de Octubre Unit, the Agustín Olachea Health Center and Mezquitito will also be in operation.

As well as Chametla, Centenario and the Regional Child Development Center, to guarantee accessibility to medical care in different areas. “This wide range of services seeks to cover the needs of the population in an effective and efficient manner,” he concluded.
