Despite the call of the World Health Organization (WHO) to strengthen vaccination actions prior to the 2023-2024 winter season, low immunization is still reported in Mexico, less than 10 percent in the case of the biological against covid -19.

According to data from the Ministry of Health (Ssa), until November 21, only 1.9 million doses had been applied out of a planned total of 20 million. Yesterday, the arrival of a new shipment of the Sputnik V vaccine was reported, with 592 thousand doses, which means there are already 4 million in the country.

As part of the 2023-2024 National Vaccination Campaign, which began on October 16 and will conclude on March 31, 2024, the Ssa detailed that 10 million doses against influenza have been applied, about 30 percent of 35 million that are expected to be applied.

The international organization urged countries to encourage the population to go and get immunized at the beginning of the winter period, so that when temperatures drop and the risk of contagion increases, people have already developed immunity.

He recalled that the purpose of vaccination against seasonal influenza is to avoid serious cases of influenza and its complications, which is why 75 percent of the countries in the region of the Americas offer the vaccine to high-risk groups defined in each country, which In the case of Mexico, they include pregnant women, older adults and patients with autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases, as well as children under six years of age.

The weekly report on the situation of influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses from the Pan American Health Organization highlights that in North America flu activity is low, but the number of infections is increasing.
