The increase in cases throughout the country puts the Loreto region in the eye of the storm, with the report of three tragic deaths in the first weeks of the new year. The Regional Health Directorate confirmed these losses, which continue to show the persistent threat that the virus represents in Peruvian territory.

The first case was a little girl, just 9 months old, from the Iquitos district, who was admitted with severe bronchiolitis. Despite the efforts of health personnel at the Loreto Regional Hospital, her health rapidly deteriorated. After testing positive for Covid-19, she was transferred to pediatric intensive care, where she struggled to breathe with the help of a mechanical ventilator. However, unfortunately, doctors certified her death on January 1, 2024.

The second case occurred with the arrival to the emergency room of a 33-year-old girl with a delicate health condition. Affected by stomach complications, liver cirrhosis, leptospirosis and respiratory failure, this patient could not overcome the onslaught of the virus, since she had only received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Her critical condition did not subside, and unfortunately, on January 3, 2024, she joined the list of fatalities.

The last case recorded the loss of an adult over 89 years old, who entered the emergency area of the Apoyo Iquitos Hospital due to pneumonia. Her situation worsened when it was confirmed that she had Covid-19, making this patient the third fatality in this series of unfortunate events. This person had not received any dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

Loreto implements measures and intensifies vaccination among at-risk personnel to counteract the increase in cases and deaths from Covid-19. (Andean)

Yuri Alegre Palomino, regional health manager, told the Andina Agency about the appearance of new cases in the city of Iquitos, emphasizing that those affected had different comorbidities and had not completed the vaccination schedule against Covid-19.

Comorbidities, also known as associated diseases, refer to the simultaneous or successive presence of two or more medical conditions in the same person. These cases can be presented together or in sequence.

In addition, the specialist highlighted the implementation of stricter sanitary measures in health centers, emphasizing the mandatory use of masks. Also, he announced the beginning of an intensification of vaccination against the coronavirus aimed at high-risk personnel, which includes doctors, nurses, health workers, police officers, firefighters and other groups. This campaign will be deployed both in hospitals and public spaces, in an effort to expand protection coverage.

During the first phases of the pandemic and the second wave, Iquitos was one of the cities in the country most affected by Covid-19 in terms of cases and loss of human life. According to medical experts, the virus may have contributed to generating a certain level of herd immunity in the local population.

However, it is warned that the coronavirus is still present and can be aggressive in individuals who have critical medical conditions. Considering the current situation, it is suggested that the virus may have become endemic.
