Londoners spent a record 55 billion pounds on the purchase of country houses

More than half of buyers have sold their homes in the capital to buy real estate outside of it.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced Londoners more than ever to actively seek housing where they can comfortably spend time and work remotely at the same time, the Guardian newspaper writes, citing data from a study by the Hamptons real estate agency.

In 2021, Londoners bought over 112,000 homes outside the capital. This is the highest figure since 2007 and 62 percent more than in 2020.

And the total cost of housing purchased by Londoners this year outside the capital reached 54.9 billion pounds, which is a record.

As the study shows, Londoners began to buy housing further from the city center: in 2021, the average distance between the acquired property and the center of the capital was approximately 55 kilometers, which is ten kilometers more than a year earlier.

At the same time, more than half (57 percent) of buyers have sold their homes in London to buy property outside of it.

The average home price in the UK has grown from 450.5 thousand pounds in 2020 to 487 thousand pounds – in the current year, the study said.

Last week, the mayor of London due to an increase in coronavirus cases caused by the new Omicron strain, declared an emergency in the British capital.
