Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei passed away on the 26th at the age of 64. Belarusian media reported that Makei died suddenly without providing details. It is reported that Makei was originally scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (Sergei Lavrov) on the 28th. Now the news of his sudden death has shocked the Russian side.

Reuters quoted Belarusian news agency Belta as saying that Makei, Belarus’ foreign minister since 2012, “died suddenly”, without providing further details. According to records, Mayik, 64, had just traveled to Armenia’s capital Yerevan last week to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance of post-Soviet states, and had initially planned to meet Russian diplomats on Monday. Lavrov did not expect to suddenly hear the news of his death.

In this regard, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said in a statement: “Our department is shocked by the news of the death of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Makei. An official letter of condolence will be issued soon.”

In fact, Makei was a member of a pro-Western faction for a long time, played an important role in improving relations between Belarus and Western countries, and once criticized the Russian government. Until 2020, when large-scale anti-government protests erupted in Belarus after the presidential election, Makei’s stance suddenly changed, accusing protesters in the territory of being controlled by Western agents.

After the Russian army invaded Ukraine in February this year, Makei even declared that “the West has started the war” and called on the Ukrainian authorities to accept Russia’s proposed peace terms.
