Litigation with taxes in Senegal: WARI loses another round

Reading this court decision, we could have said that it is the descent into hell for Wari after losing this umpteenth economic-legal fight against the tax authorities in Senegal.

The Senegalese company Wari, once prolific, did not succeed in the standoff between it and the tax authorities. The digital platform for financial and commercial services was simply rejected.

Online release, which provides the information, recalls that it had seized the first civil chamber of the Court to request the cancellation of the collection document. The verdict delivered yesterday Thursday, August 20, by the Tribunal fully ruled in favor of the General Directorate of Taxes and Domains of Senegal.

Created in 2008 by Senegalese businessman Kabirou Mbodje, the Wari company, which was a leader in the field of money transfer, seems to be losing ground in front of electronic money cash of which Orange is now the leader.

In 2017, it was the National Network of Money Transfer Providers (Renapta) that called for a boycott. However, for almost four months now, money transfer providers and banks have been wary of any contact with Wari.

In an article dated 04 June, we had recounted the main difficulties encountered by users of the Wari service. Among other constraints, there was the difficulty for customers to withdraw huge sums from partner banks which posed an IBAN (International Bank Account Number) problem imposed by Kabirou Mbodje’s company. Providers find this method very tedious. They waste days just to touch their money.

Many of them criticized the lack of security in the network because of the scams they suffered. In addition, it is difficult to get an adequate response from Wari. When a service provider suffered a scam, Wari made no effort to track down the thief, so no support or even support so that the victim could sue the scammer or be reimbursed by the company whose fault came from its computer system.

With all these difficulties encountered by customers and multi-service providers, Wari was in free fall because Orange Money, Free Cash, Wizall Money and Wave are gaining ground and very strongly.

Wari’s denial …

Barely a week after the publication of our article on Wari, the management sent us a press release that we had published to respect the right of reply.

in the document received, even if the company mentions difficulties in its relations with banks established in Senegal, nevertheless it has acquired strong growth at the global level with a presence in 100 countries.

Today more than ever, the 100% Senegalese company should carry out draconian reforms in its operation by innovating at the risk of losing significant market shares or simply disappearing like “Joni Joni” of the businessman Bougane Gueye Dani.
