Listed house moved in music and light in Graubünden

The Grisons village of Mulegns attended a special spectacle on Thursday evening. An old house classified as heritage has been moved to avoid a bottleneck on the road to the Julier pass. All in music and images projected on the facade.

The spectacular displacement of the ‘White Villa’, of a few meters, took place from 22:00. Its visual and musical accompaniment was provided by the cultural organization Origen, holder of the 2018 Wakker Prize. The building was illuminated and sung in Romansh like a doll’s house.

The songs on loudspeakers evoked the homesickness that took the original owner of the house, Jean Jegher, a local confectioner who left for Bordeaux, where he made his fortune. The latter finally returned to Graubünden to build the ‘White Villa’ in Mulegns in 1856.

Needle hunting

The Julier Pass is the main road axis between the north of Graubünden and the Engadine. There is no alternative: all heavy goods vehicles and cars have to go through this needle eye. Regularly, vehicles touch and damage the facades of houses, leaving clearly visible traces.

The relocation of the house cost 5.6 million francs, of which 1.95 million is covered by the canton. Origen intends to animate the cultural life of the village of 17 inhabitants in the future and to make it a place of theatrical creation, exhibitions and artistic installations.
