The meteorologists’ warning came true. Thunderstorms, downpours, hail and strong gusts of wind swept across the Czech Republic on Sunday. Firefighters from the Pardubice and Liberec regions report dozens of departures. Around 9 pm were the heaviest downpours in the Olomouc region. According to the Aladin model, more strong storms will come at night. The meteorologists’ warning of heavy rains is valid in Moravia until Monday afternoon.
The first storms appeared in western Bohemia on Sunday early afternoon. Around 3 pm, a belt of storms stretched from the South Bohemian Region through Central Bohemia to Liberec, where the precipitation was strongest.
Firefighters from the Liberec region intervened mainly in the Semily and Jablonec regions. They were busy with fallen trees and power lines. In some places, the roads were completely or partially impassable, said Lucie Hložková, a spokeswoman for the regional fire brigade. “We have more than 15 events reported so far,” she said on Sunday afternoon. The places where the trees fell on the lines were handed over by firefighters to the employees of the ČEZ energy company.

In the evening, the Pardubice fire brigade counted 11 exits to the fallen trees, another ten or so cases concerned the pumping of flooded areas and a collapsed road.
Meteorologists warned against the rapid flooding of smaller streams, flooding of cellars, fall of trees or lightning injuries. Due to the strong wind, which in places in gusts reached speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, people had to secure windows, doors or loose objects in the gardens.
Especially in Moravia and Silesia, it will rain heavily on Mondays as well. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, there is a risk of flooding in some regions tonight and also tomorrow and Tuesday mornings.
The warning against rising river levels applies to the South Bohemian, Pardubice and Olomouc regions, most of the Moravian-Silesian region and parts of the Pilsen, Central Bohemian, Hradec Králové and South Moravian regions and the Vysočina region. Especially on smaller watercourses, the levels can rise up to the level of the third flood stage.
“Due to the predicted precipitation, we expect river levels to rise in the evening on Sunday, with the first degree of flood activity expected to be reached, occasionally up to the second degree, especially in the Upper Vltava, Middle Elbe, Central Moravia and partly also in the Odra basin,” said Czech Hydrometeorological of the Institute.
“Due to the previous saturation, there is an increased risk of very rapid ascents with the possibility of occasional exceeding of the third degree of flood activity on the streams draining the Jeseníky Mountains,” they added.
