ISRO Chairman S Somnath – Warm Welcome on IndiGo Flight

On August 23, India created history by making a soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 at the South Pole of the Moon. The video starts with Pooja informing about the plane’s PA system. It is with great pride that Pooja introduces S Somanath to the passengers.

“I am pleased to announce the presence of ISRO Chairman Shri S. Somnath on our flight today. A big round of applause for Somnath and team. We are honored to have you flying on our flight, sir. Thank you very much for making India proud,” said Pooja. He was received with great enthusiasm by the passengers. Another member of the flight crew approached S Somnath with a tray of food and drinks and handed him a note full of congratulatory words. Pooja shared some photos taken with S Somnath on social media.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Thalang Kunju Musaliyar College of Engineering, Kollam district under the University of Kerala and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in 1985 after completing his post graduation. He was involved in the initial phase of construction and development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Appointed Project Director of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III in 2020. He served as Deputy Director of the Propulsion and Space Coordination Entity until November 2014. Both were successfully implemented in the GSLV Mk-Kakaka D1 rocket (GSLV Mk-III D). He also took the helm of the throttleable engines for the Chandrayaan-2 lander. In 2018, he was appointed as the Director of VSSC. He oversaw the launch of the 50th PSLV and the launch of Chandrayaan-2.
