The Leenaards Foundation awarded its 2020 Scientific Prize to a team led by Professor Andrea Ablasser, from EPFL, alongside Michel Gilliet from CHUV. Their project aims to better understand the causes and effects of hyperactivity of the immune system in case of autoimmune disease. Six scholarships are also awarded.
In all, the foundation will donate nearly 1.7 million francs to research on the Lake Geneva region. The team of immunologist Andrea Ablasser and professor and dermatologist Michel Gilliet receives 650,000 francs. At first, the duo will focus their work on three skin diseases: psoriasis, lupus erythematosus and scleroderma (hardening of the skin).
This prize for translational medical research is awarded to groups of scientists promoting collaboration between researchers from at least two institutions in the Lake Geneva region. Each year, one to three projects are supported.
Grants for the next generation
Six scientific grants, for a total amount of one million francs, were also awarded. These grants allow clinician-researchers to free up the time necessary for their research while maintaining their clinical activity, said the foundation on Monday in a press release.
Three types of scholarships have been awarded (to executive doctors or heads of clinics, to doctors at the start of their careers and to doctors who are doing a thesis). The Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne is responsible for the selection of scholarship recipients.
