INCHEON, South Korea, Dec. 24 (Yonhap) — Actor Lee Sun-kyun of the Oscar-winning film “Parasite” returned home early Sunday after 19 hours of police interrogation about his alleged drug use.
“I’m sorry it’s a little late, but I’ve finished the police interrogation on the blackmail case,” Lee said, leaving the office. “I hope the police will wisely determine which statements are more reliable between mine and those of the blackmailers,” he added.
Regarding suspicions of drug use, the 48-year-old actor reiterated his previous comments that he responded “honestly” to related questions, without giving further details.
Lee arrived on Saturday morning at an office of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, about 30 kilometers west of Seoul, with his lawyer. A police investigation cannot take place between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am, to protect human rights, but police said they received consent from the actor for an investigation during the night.
Lee is suspected of using marijuana and other illegal drugs at the home of a hostess who worked at an upscale bar in Seoul’s Gangnam district on multiple occasions since early this year.
Lee was previously questioned twice, on October 28 and November 4, about the same case. The overnight interrogation will be Lee’s last, according to police.
In October, Lee filed a lawsuit against two people, including his hostess, for blackmailing him after news of his alleged drug use surfaced. The woman was arrested last month, and police are believed to have requested an arrest warrant for the other person.
The actor claimed that the woman had tricked him into taking drugs and that she did not know what she was taking.
Lee tested negative in both a rapid reagent test carried out during police investigations and a comprehensive drug test carried out last month by the National Forensic Service.
