Lebanon: Le Drian, who meets Thursday with the head of the Hezbollah bloc… focuses his meetings on the south and on electing a president for Lebanon

French presidential envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian ended the first day of his contacts with Lebanese officials and political leaders, without any of them revealing that they had new proposals that would push the internal parties toward consensus on electing a president of the republic.

However, Le Drian matched the presidential elections with his concern about the vacancy in the leadership of the army, especially since its commander, General Joseph Aoun, is one of the names put forward by Paris for approval. He also matched the French concern about the violations to which Resolution 1701 is being exposed in southern Lebanon, which has become almost paralyzed after the party opened… God is the southern front against Israel in the Gaza war.

What was striking about the first day was that Le Drian was alone with the army commander when necessary. He was silent in all the interviews he gave before noon and in the evening, contenting himself with indicating that he was acting in the name of the five countries concerned with Lebanon.

In Thursday’s calls, attention was drawn to a meeting he will hold with the head of the Hezbollah parliamentary bloc, Muhammad Raad, at a time of cooling in the party’s relationship with Paris after it sided with Israel in the Gaza war.
