Las Doñas: A Growing Association Empowering the Hispanic Community

A group of friends concerned about helping the Hispanic community one day decided to establish themselves as an association and today they have a national presence.

They are Las Doñas, a group of Hispanic New Yorkers who have been meeting in Queens for a year and are growing more and more with the intention of making a change in their community.

Martha Morales, one of the founders, pointed out that they realized that they could organize and achieve their objectives.

“Because we are already of a certain age we are not useful, but we are useful and we can empower and we can continue and we can fight and grow more,” he said.

“That’s what we want is for more people in the community to find out about what we do and join us,” he added.

So far they have a presence in the tri-state area and in seven states and are looking for more people who want to join the movement.

Antonio Alarcón, an activist, helped them organize and establish themselves as an organization.

“It is a group, there are more than 250 women who we train to be leaders in their communities, we also give them the real tools to fight for laws that affect them and try to change them,” he indicated.

Many of the members are immigrants, several of them undocumented.

Regarding the controversy over its improper uses, this is the message that the Fabuloso company published on its website. However, many Hispanics point out that the product has instructions in English on its label, which prevents them from reading and leads them to make dangerous mistakes.

Fabuloso was launched in Venezuela in the 1980s, a time when, according to the company itself, cleaning products lacked fragrance and distinction. In 1983 it would arrive in Mexico, and it was not until 1996 when it began to be marketed in the United States.
