Start of the cup team championship on January 28th

Next weekend, the German Chess Cup Championship for teams will begin at eight venues with the preliminary round. A total of 40 clubs qualified. Eight clubs are allowed to skip the preliminary round groups due to their pre-qualification and are already in the intermediate round. Here are the eight winners of the preliminary round.

It will be played in Berlin, Potsdam, Ludwigshafen, Kassel, Sasbach, Meuselwitz, Stendal and Verden. 16 teams are eliminated on Saturday 28 January, followed by eight a day later.

All preliminary round groups at a glance

The clubs OSG Baden-Baden, SK Kirchweyhe, Schachfreunde Deizisau, SC Viernheim, SC Heimbach-Weis-Neuwied, SG Leipzig, SF Lieme and SG Solingen, as quarter-finalists of the last DPMM, have priority for the intermediate round.

Group 1

Host: Meuselwitzer SV (Thuringia)
Venue: Lutherhaus, Poderschauer Gasse 29, 04610 Meuselwitz
Referee: FSR Gert Kleint

Meuselwitzer SV
SK Gründau
SK Kelheim
SG 1871 Löberitz

The host is a blatant outsider in this quartet. Löberitz brings the strongest line-up to the start, including two grandmasters and another four players with DWZ over 2200. Gründau and Kelheim could be a stumbling block for Löberitz with the best players.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

FM Robert Stein (Löberitz), 2379
WGM Dana Reizniece-Ozola (Löberitz), 2292
Norman Schütze (Loeberitz), 2290
WGM Laura Rogule (Löberitz), 2277
FM Pascal Neukirchner (Gründau), 2274

group 2

Host: SV Mattnetz (Berlin)
Venue: Treptow Town Hall, Neue Krugallee 2-6, 12435 Berlin
Referee: ISR Lothar Oettel

SV Mattnetz
Greifswalder SV
Lübecker SV
SC Oranienburg

There is no favorite in this group. Mattnetz, Greifswald and Lübeck are roughly equivalent. Oranienburg falls a bit and will have a hard time. Since the hosts broadcast their state league competition live last Sunday, we expect a broadcast here as well.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

Georg Tscheuschner (Mattnetz), 2206
CM Aaron Matthes (Oranienburg), 2202
FM Joa Max Bornholdt (Lübeck), 2186
FM Ullrich Krause (Lübeck), 2177 – DSB President!
Wilko Stubbe (Greifswald), 2174

group 3

Host: Potsdamer SV Mitte (Brandenburg)
Venue: Zeppelin GS 23, Haeckelstr. 74, 14471 Potsdam
Referee: NSR Dr. René Reiner Starke

Potsdam SV Mitte
Chess Friends Berlin
SC Koenigsspringer Hamburg
SV Bad Schwartau

This time, the Schachfreunde Berlin have positioned themselves a little stronger than in 2019 and anything other than qualifying for the intermediate round would be a sensation. Königsspringer Hamburg is the clear number two with three 2200s. Potsdam and Bad Schwartau are outsiders.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

GM Jan-Christian Schröder (SF Berlin), 2559
GM Marco Baldauf (SF Berlin), 2493
IM Emil Schmidek (SF Berlin), 2412
FM Max Hess (SF Berlin), 2396
FM Johannes Florstedt (SF Berlin), 2362

group 4

Host: SC runner couple Verden (Lower Saxony)
Venue: probably Verdener Campus-Oberschule, Trift 1, 27283 Verden
Referee: FSR Peter Anderberg

SC pair of runners Verden
German Blind and Visually Impaired Chess Federation (DBSB)
Dusseldorf SK
SC Diogenes Hamburg

The German Blitz Chess Team Champion Düsseldorf is the clear favorite in this group. And host Verden the blatant outsider. We are curious about the line-up of the DBSB: Does Mirko Eichstaedt play for Potsdam (Group 3) or for the DBSB selection?!

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

GM Andrej Orlov (Düsseldorf), 2510
GM Alexander Berelowitsch (Düsseldorf), 2474
GM Felix Levin (Düsseldorf), 2435
IM Francesco de Gleria (Düsseldorf), 2346
IM Lars Stark (Dusseldorf), 2331

group 5

Host: SVG Caissa Kassel (Hesse)
Venue: Harleshausen community center, Rolf-Lucas-Str. 22, 34128 Kassel
Referee: ISR Dr. Juergen Klüners

SVG Caissa Kassel
Aachen SV
VfB Schach Leipzig
SK Nordhorn-Blanke

Aachen and Nordhorn-Blanke will probably decide the place in the intermediate round among themselves. Hosts Cassel and Leipzig can annoy the favorites a bit if they don’t play at their best.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

IM Christian Seel (Aachen), 2493
IM Thomas Koch (Aachen), 2422
IM Frank Kroeze (Nordhorn), 2383
FM Markus Hahn (Kassel), 2321
FM Rob Bertholee (Nordhorn), 2311

group 6

Host: Stendaler SK (Saxony-Anhalt)
Venue: Cafeteria “Am Schwanenteich”, Fabrikstr. 5, 39576 Stendal
Referee: ISR Dan-Peter Poetke

Stendal SK
ESV Nickelhuette Aue
Hamelin SV
SSV Vimaria Weimar

Nickelhütte Aue is the big favorite in Stendal. Hameln, with DBSB trainer Wilfried Bode, could cause a surprise. Weimar will have a hard time. Just like the host, who hopes for the Hansch family, but doesn’t have a good fourth board.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

GM Gergely Number (Aue),
GM Roman Slobodjan (Aue), 2384
FM Wilfried Bode (Hamelin), 2343
IM Hannes Langrock (Aue), 2323
IM Cliff Wichmann (Aue), 2312

group 7

Host: SK Ludwigshafen 1912 (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Venue: Club home, Luitpoldstr. 37, 67063 Ludwigshafen
Referee: ISR Dr. Holger Moritz

SK Ludwigshafen 1912
SK Bebenhausen
SC Aljechin Emmersweiler
SV Walldorf

Walldorf is the favorite for qualifying for the second round, Bebenhausen the most feared opponent. The qualification of hosts Ludwigshafen would be a sensation. Emmersweiler will have no chance in the big city on the Rhine.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

IM Adrian Gschnitzer (Walldorf), 2442
FM Georg Braun (Bebenhausen), 2382
IM Julius Muckle (Walldorf), 2370
David Dyer (Walldorf), 2356
FM Horst Vonthron (Walldorf), 2346

group 8

Host: SF Sasbach (Baden)
Venue: Council Hall, Kirchplatz 1a, 77880 Sasbach
Referee: NSR Klaus foot

SF Sasbach
SC Gröbenzell
SG Kaiserslautern 1905
Stuttgarter SF

This quartet is probably the strongest and most balanced preliminary round group. Sasbach and Stuttgart have a few 2300s to offer, but Kaiserslautern and Gröbenzell are also quite well occupied.

Nominated players (top 5 according to DWZ):

IM Mark Kvetny (Stuttgart), 2389
FM Marco Riehle (Sasbach), 2363
FM Timothee Heinz (Sasbach), 2336
FM Igor Neyman (Stuttgart), 2327
IM Andreas Strunski (Stuttgart), 2291
