A classic film is celebrating its birthday: 65 years have passed since the English comedy “Ladykillers” set new standards. Because there had never been such a story in the cinema. Five criminals plan to steal money and rent an old lady for it.

Since its premiere in London in December 1955, “Ladykillers” has been a masterpiece of black English humor. Alec Guinness as Professor Marcus was often copied and never matched.

“The perfect candidate”: From emancipation in Saudi Arabia

Her first film was about a girl whose emancipation a bicycle was important. At the beginning of “The Perfect Candidate”, the director Haifaa Al Mansour shows a young woman at the wheel of her car in Saudi Arabia, making it clear that the focus here is on a woman who thinks progressively and acts independently. In Saudi Arabia women have only been allowed to get a driver’s license for almost two years. The protagonist is a young doctor who is running for the local council.
This quickly becomes a political issue and the doctor is even invited to a talk show.

“Crescendo”: Drama not only for classical music lovers
In classical music, “crescendo” describes a slow increase in volume. In this respect, the title is also the perfect program for this drama. Klara is an energetic woman full of energy. On behalf of her “Foundation for Effective Altruism” she contacted the famous conductor Eduard Sporck. He is supposed to put together an Israeli-Palestinian youth orchestra as a symbol against hatred.
