Labor retains seat in Sunak’s first electoral test

London, December 2 The British Labor Party, in opposition, this Friday retained a parliamentary seat for the city of Chester (north-west of England), in Rishi Sunak’s first electoral test as prime minister.

Labor Samantha Dixon won the seat after a by-election held on Thursday which was left vacant following the resignation of Labor MP Christian Matheson.

Dixon won 10,974 votes, while Conservative candidate Liz Wardlaw finished second with 6,335 votes, according to the result of this by-election, which was held under the simple majority electoral system.

Labor Christian Matheson had resigned from his seat in Chester on October 21 after being charged by the Governor of the House of Commons (low) with serious sexual misconduct.

“People in Chester and across our country are really worried. Worried about losing their homes because they can’t pay the mortgage or rent, worried about being able to get the heat on, worried about being able to put food away for their families .” , Dixon said after winning this election, whose participation was 41.2%.

“This is the cost of 12 years of Conservative government. The government, which has devastated our economy, destroyed our public services and betrayed the people who put their trust in them in the last general election (2019), has added.

It is the first constituency nomination to fill a seat since Boris Johnson was forced to step down last July amid pressure from his colleagues lining up following the party scandal at his Downing Street residence during the pandemic.

Johnson was replaced on Sept. 6 by Liz Truss, who in turn was sacked by her deputies after just 44 days in charge. EFE extension
