Kremlin-connected hackers allegedly hacked Truss’s private phone

Opposition parties are calling for an independent investigation into the hacker attack and the leaking of information to the newspaper.

The hacking attack was reportedly discovered as Truss was running for the position of Conservative Party leader and prime minister this summer. According to the Mail on Sunday, then Prime Minister Boris Johnson decided to keep the security breach a secret. Truss succeeded in the election, became prime minister, but resigned after six weeks.

The newspaper said pro-Kremlin hackers had access to text messages with foreign statesmen who also discussed the war in Ukraine and arms supplies. At the same time, Britain is one of Ukraine’s key partners in defending against the Russian invasion, training Ukrainian soldiers and providing Kiev with military equipment.

The mobile phone was reportedly locked in a safe deposit box in the government building following the discovery of the attack. The disclosure of this information, according to the newspaper, explains in retrospect why Truss suddenly changed his phone number shortly before becoming Prime Minister for more than a decade, causing confusion and alarm among his colleagues.
