Kazakhstan government: 164 killed in protests last week

Large-scale riots broke out in Kazakhstan last week after the government raised fuel prices. More than 2,200 people were injured in the riots, according to the latest reports.

President: ‘They are terrorists and bandits’

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev says he has the situation back under control. This is partly thanks to Russia, which quickly sent soldiers to, among other things, recapture Almaty airport from demonstrators. Tokaev argues that ‘terrorists and bandits’ are behind the riots. More than 5,000 people have been arrested in connection with the riots.

Meanwhile, the authorities are trying to get normal life back on track. The Ministry of Commerce announced on Sunday that supplies of basic food to remote areas have been secured, according to the Russian news agency TASS. According to the Ministry of Energy, the supply of fuel and gas has started again.
