Tehran-backed militias, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah, have been deployed over the past decade to support President Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s civil war.

In 2019, then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally recognized Israel as a sovereign party in the Golan Heights. The Syrian territory was officially annexed by Israel in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.
