Former Juventus Turin midfielder Claudio Marchisio has revealed that Karim Benzema is close to joining the Old Lady in the 2009-2010 season.

Claudio Marchisio, former Italian midfielder, has been retired since October 3, 2019. Zenit Saint Petersburg was his last club. Multiple winner of Serie A and finalist of Euro 2012 with Italy, the native of Turin has distinguished himself in his career by a very sober and elegant style of play. Trained at Juve, he played 389 matches for the first team between 2006 and 2018, before a one-season freelance in Russia. Under the jersey of the Old Lady, he also participated in two Champions League finals, in 2015 against Barça of the Messi-Suarez-Neymar trio – lost 3-1; then two years later against Real Madrid, but could not do anything to prevent the coronation of the players of Zinédine Zidane (4-1).

“Karim was about to join us”
This Thursday, he let himself go to a confession during an interview with “Cronache di Spogliatoio” on Youtube about a player he faced during his career: Karim Benzema, who has become a real leader at Real Madrid. “It’s true, Benzema was close to Juventus, the year Ciro Ferrara was the coach (during the 2009-2010 season, editor’s note). He hadn’t been good at Real Madrid and the Merengues had to choose between selling him or Gonzalo Higuain. They both ended up staying and a few years later Higuain went to Naples. Karim was set to join us at Juve that year, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. There was certainly a possibility, however ”, he explained.
Arrived in July 2009 at the Merengue club from Olympique Lyonnais for a sum of 35 million euros – and six performance bonuses – Benzema had not really been able to convince for his discovery of La Liga, being sometimes relegated to the bench by his then coach, Manuel Pellegrini, in favor of Gonzalo Higuain. Benzema had only played 27 La Liga games in favor of Real.
