Jungfrau Zeitung – millions for school renovation clearly accepted

Wilderswil | 2. May 2021

With almost 80 percent yes-votes, the electorate approved the commitment loan for the renovation of the more than 100-year-old school building at the ballot box. Mayor Rolf Herren was happy with the result and is looking forward to the detailed planning. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for the summer of 2022.

In 1907 the Wilderswil schoolhouse was presumably inaugurated with timpani and trumpets. May 2, 2021 should be another feast day for many in the community. But definitely for Mayor Rolf Herren. On the phone, he commented on the result of the vote with “Joy reigns”. With 499 (77.87 percent) yes- to 142 no-votes, the Wilderswil residents clearly committed to the renovation of the school building.

With a turnout of 34.91 percent, the necessary commitment credit of six million francs was clearly accepted at the ballot box. “Very clear,” as Herren put it. The mayor interprets the result as a “commitment by the electorate for the future generation”. For him personally, the clear yes also shows that the local council is on the right track. “We will now be even more motivated to continue planning,” promised Herren.

Construction work will start in summer 2022

This means that the municipal council will tackle the detailed planning as soon as possible and commission a general planner with the project. The goal is still to start with the renovation work in the summer of 2022, says mayor Herren. He is also confident that the six million loan will “be enough”.

«In the feasibility study, we clarified the costs very seriously. That’s why I don’t expect additional costs, ”says Herren. He is also convinced that the community can handle the redevelopment and hopes that the financing plan will work out without a tax increase despite the negative effects of the pandemic.

As this newspaper reported, the wooden floor ceilings are being refurbished and the sanitary facilities are being brought up to date, as is the building services. And because curriculum 21 requires that the Wilderswil students work more in groups, more space is needed in the school building. However, no new classrooms are to be created.
