Jungfrau Zeitung – 14 becomes one: Organization is completely reinventing itself

Pro Senectute Canton of Bern | December 18, 2020

She is convinced that with the reconstitution into a single cantonal foundation and the integration of the previous regional and local sponsorships, a new, sustainable structure will be created for the largest specialist and service organization for senior citizens.

With the entry into force of the cantonal foundation Pro Senectute Kanton Bern on January 1, 2021, Pro Senectute in the canton of Bern will be given a new legal look. As a communication shows, the merger of the four regional, legally independent Pro Senectute organizations Berner Oberland, Biel / Bienne-Seeland, Emmental-Oberaargau and Region Bern as well as Pro Senectute Kanton Bern will simplify processes and save costs. The previous eight regional sponsoring associations and sections have been renamed into eight sponsoring associations by Pro Senectute Kanton Bern. In future, these would make an important contribution to anchoring Pro Senectute in the various regions of the canton of Bern – true to the foundation’s motto “Stronger together”.

All regions under one roof

The new cantonal foundation will be managed by the Board of Trustees, headed by Bernhard Antener as President, Alois Liechti (Vice President), Thomas Biedermann (Board Member Pro Senectute Switzerland), Annegret Hebeisen (Politics representative), Peter Eugster (Biel / Bienne-Seeland region), Martin Kolb (representation of the Emmental-Oberaargau region), Peter Pfister (representation of the Bernese Oberland) and Peter Vondal (representation of the Bern region).

… and then.

… and then.

117 employees and 2000 volunteers

The organization is now divided into the departments of social counseling and community work, education and sport, services and volunteers, health promotion and central services, as it is called. The management is headed by Marcel Schenk from Steffisburg. “This structure is intended to help ensure that services for older people in the canton of Bern can be offered consistently in high quality and at the same conditions,” says the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bernhard Antener. These services will continue to be provided by all existing employees who will also contribute their specialist knowledge to the new cantonal organization. “We are thus keeping a promise that we made at the beginning of the reorganization,” says Antener. The departments of Pro Senectute Kanton Bern will continue to be supported by around 2000 voluntary course and sports directors.

New ways for old people’s homes

The seven old people’s homes, which were previously under the sponsorship of the Pro Senectute sections Burgdorf, Frutigen, Interlaken and Niedersimmental, will be made independent on January 1, 2021 and run by sponsoring associations as non-profit joint-stock companies. With the independence, Pro Senectute Kanton Bern is keeping up with the times and simplifying responsibilities. “All of these changes are taking place behind the scenes, setting the course for the future and not affecting the offers for senior citizens or their relatives,” explains Bernhard Antener and adds: “We look forward to continuing with all of our services in the existing one To be present throughout the canton. “
