US President Joe Biden responded Russia’s decision to send basketball star Brittney Griner, convicted of drug trafficking, to a maximum security penal colony.
The case with the basketball player has long been a personal cause for Biden, who personally promised her in a letter that he would do anything to bring her back to her homeland.
Recall that Griner has been missing for several days, after which her lawyers announced that she had been taken to a place of detention described as “true hell”.

Yesterday evening, the US president asked his administration to contact the Russian side and seek urgent negotiations to improve the conditions in which the athlete is being held.
“Every minute that Brittney Griner is unjustly detained in Russia is too long for us. As the administration continues to work tirelessly to secure her release, the president has ordered to urge the Russian authorities to improve the treatment and conditions in which he should be in a penal colony,” Biden’s press secretary Cartin Jean-Pierre said.
Recall that Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison for possession of an electronic cigarette with cannabis oil.
