Jirka Pomeje reflects on the success of his films in Russia and film mistakes in the notorious comedy Sun, Hay, Strawberries

Do you ever watch your filmed stuff?

“Essentially not. I only watched my least favorite movie, and that is Angel Face. That’s what I think is my best filmmaking. I also had the second part ready, which was even more exciting, and I can say that it is a great pity that it was not filmed. At the same time, he celebrated such success in Russia!”

In Russia?

“I was with that film in Moscow at the Faces of Love festival. And he scored so well there that something happened to me that had never happened to me before or since. People found out what hotel I was staying in, brought me bouquets and thanked me. And the women were moved and said: He is like Rasputin! They meant Jirka It will pass. I hadn’t thought of that connection at all.’

Here again, the Sun, Hay trilogy broke records…

“Yes. The second film, Sun, hay and a couple of faces, went to the cinemas at the end of June 1989. And by the end of the year, and this was a revolution in the meantime and there were almost no cinemas, 4,200,000 viewers saw the film. Since then, more people have not come to the cinema for one film.”

Which of the three parts do you like best?

“A couple, A couple of slaps, because I could shoot here as I wanted. In the first one, the censorship cut out almost twenty minutes, and there was no money for the third part, and because of that I couldn’t film it as written in the script.”

Why did they cut it out for you?

“At that time they shouted at me that I mocked the socialist today, the village and the farmers, the pensioners, everything. There were even suggestions that I should be punished with a five-year ban.”

So?

“Yes. Don’t worry, I’m from a hunting family, I’ll pull myself together, go to Hoštice, plant trees in the forest, be in the fresh air, pick strawberries and mushrooms and be at peace. Goodbye, I said and left. You can’t do that, they called me. How can I not? I made a stupid film in your opinion, so let’s put it in the safe and I’m banned, so what am I going to do in Prague?” T

y cut scenes not preserved?

“No. The warehouse where these things were was disposed of by Mr. Marhoul, who became the director.’

Wasn’t there such a problem in fairy tales?

“Yes, right at Princess Jasněnka’s place! For example, Jíra’s fight with Řimbuch was longer, there were snakes that crawled against him, we left only birds there and even abbreviated. I was told by a comrade at the time that it was such a horror that children would faint in the cinema.’

That wasn’t preserved either?

“Unfortunately, no! We had such jobs with it. That whole sequence where we had live snakes on set is gone. We shot it on a similar principle to what Spielberg had in Indiana Jones. There were rubber snakes and real ones crawled between them. And it looked great.”

What is your favorite fairy tale?

“The devil’s bride. She fit me the best. But I also like the others, Jasněnka, Princess from the Mill and From the Hell of Happiness.”
