Jakarta – On the Indonesian island of Java, Mount Merapi spewed ash and glowing rocks. The Geological Survey (GA) announced Monday that a mixture of extremely hot rock, gas and ash had flown a kilometer away from the volcano’s slopes. There are no reports of injuries.

About 35 km north of Yogyakarta, Merapi is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. There have been repeated eruptions since 2018, and in early January again emitted ash and gas. As a precaution, hundreds of residents were recently taken to safety. After the new operation on Monday, authorities initially lowered the alert level to the second highest level.

Danger of fire circles

In a devastating eruption in 2010, more than 340 people were killed and tens of thousands displaced. The famous Borobudur and Brahman temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are also very close to the volcano.

Indonesia is called the Ring of Fire in the Pacific. There are 127 active volcanoes in the island nation, of which Merapi is considered the most active.
