James Webb Space Telescope successfully deployed primary mirror (photo)

Webb is capable of captivating the imagination of people, even those accustomed to images from the Hubble Space Telescope, scientists say.

NASA specialists have completed the process of deploying the main mirror of the James Webb Space Telescope, which continues to move towards its destination. It is reported by BBC.

The project to launch the telescope to the Lagrange point L₂ of the Sun-Earth system, which is located at a distance of 1.5 million km from our planet, is being implemented jointly with the European and Canadian Space Agencies.

James Webb should be a transformative tool in the exploration of all corners of space. Scientists intend to use the $ 10 billion observatory and its mirror in order to capture the events that took place several hundred million years after the Big Bang. They want to see the very first stars that lit up the universe.

Experts will also train the telescope’s large “eye” on the atmospheres of distant planets to see if these worlds might be habitable.

Webb has the capacity to boggle the imagination of people, even those used to images from the Hubble Space Telescope – and I know it’s hard to imagine, ”said Lee Feinberg, who leads the Webb mirror development team at the US space agency.

According to him, the telescope is so powerful that almost everywhere, wherever it is directed, specialists will discover new possibilities.

It is known that the development and construction of Webb took 30 years, and it will continue the scientific discoveries of the Hubble, which is nearing the end of its service life.

However, real proof of the observatory’s power will not appear until this summer, when the first images of the telescope are received and transmitted to Earth. Experts expect to teach not only impressive images, but also answers to many questions: for example, how did the universe begin and does life exist outside the Earth?

Recall recently the Hubble Space Telescope snapped a photograph of a spiral galaxy jumper NGC 3568.

Also Focus published the brightest pictures of the Hubble telescope over 30 years of his research.
