James Webb Space Telescope Portrait of Jupiter, Wow!

Jakarta

So far, portraits of Planet Jupiter can be clear because NASA has sent spacecraft far there. Now, James Webb Space Telescope can do it remotely.

Photographs of the beautiful Planet Jupiter have been taken by NASA from spacecraft such as Galileo or Voyager. This vehicle was flown there in order to be able to take pictures from a closer distance.

But now there is a sophisticated and super expensive telescope, namely the James Webb Space Telescope that has been in the sky since December 2021. This telescope, which was made at a cost of USD 10 billion (Rp 150 trillion) is a collaboration of NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency.

The James Webb Space Telescope need not be sent far to Jupiter. He just hangs out at his observation point at Lagrange Point 2 (LP2), which is about 1.6 million km from Earth. But the results are not inferior to the spacecraft that NASA sent to the corners of the universe.

Most recently, NASA released a portrait of Jupiter from James Webb, as seen from the site NASA, Sunday (17/7/2022). This photo was released to the Mikulski Archive of the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Released is an infrared photo of Jupiter from the James Webb telescope’s NIRCam device with a shortwave filter. So far, infrared portraits are difficult to do because infrared waves will be absorbed as the object being observed is far away. Jupiter fans will immediately recognize the Great Red Spot, a large red spot that characterizes Planet Jupiter.

The Great Red Spot is a storm large enough to engulf the Earth. Therefore, the ability of this telescope in infrared photos, deserves thumbs up because Jupiter’s spots appear white.

“These photos of Jupiter show a complete understanding of what the Webb telescope can observe from the faintest and most distant galaxies, to the planets in our own solar system that we can see in the sky with our eyes,” said Bryan Holler, a scientist. at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

In the photo it also looks like the moon belongs to Planet Jupiter namely Europe. This month is a favorite of scientists because it is thought to have oceans under its thick icy crust.

“I can’t believe that we see everything so clearly, and how bright they are,” said Stefanie Milam, NASA’s Webb deputy project scientist.

Scientists are eager to see these images. It was evidence that Webb could observe satellites and rings near bright solar system objects such as Jupiter, Saturn and Mars, as well as clumps of material on satellites on other planets.
