Climate change on Svalbard is greater than what has been known

– The new data shows that the temperature has changed dramatically in recent decades. In particular, the change is great for the coldest days, when the daytime temperature is lower than -10 degrees, says climate scientist Øyvind Nordli at the Meteorological Institute in a press release.

The data is published in the scientific journal Polar Research.

Over the past ten years, there have been, on average, only 67 cold days per year, while in the official normal period from 1961 to 1990 there were 131 cold days on average.

– We know that the climate has changed a lot in Svalbard in recent times, but now we know what the changes look like in a long-term perspective. The data series from Svalbard also shows several similar features with the evolution of the temperature in the Arctic as a whole, says Nordli.

The Meteorological Institute has had regular measurements on Svalbard since 1911.
