Soon the week-long member of parliament Timo Vornasen communication, or rather the lack of it, has been at the center of the scandal.

Crisis communication expert Harri Saukkomaa can see that it would have been worthwhile for Vornasen and the basic Finns to come forward quickly after the first news published last Friday.

– The general rule is that in such situations you should tell as much as possible as soon as possible.

Instead, both Vornanen and the party were tight-lipped for a long time, and for example the chairman Riikka Purra did not respond to interview requests last weekend.

– If you don’t tell enough in the beginning, different details will emerge in any case. They then often lead to new news, says Saukkomaa.

The parliamentary group of Fundamental Finns dismissed Vornase unanimously on Thursday. Vornanen will continue as a Member of Parliament and plans to establish his own parliamentary group.

The apology was late

Until now, Vornanen has commented on his case sparingly, mainly on his own Facebook page. He has not denied the suspected shooting in the center of Helsinki.

In his publications, Vornanen has emphasized that while the preliminary investigation of the case is ongoing, he cannot comment on it very much. Vornanen apologized for his act on Thursday.

– I would like to express my sincere apology to the Basic Finnish Party, MPs and the entire MP institution, Vornanen said in his press release.

Saukkomaa says that he once wrote instructions for a good apology. In Vornanen’s case, the apology came at a point when the uproar had already swelled to enormous proportions.

– One instruction is that it should be done quite quickly, which is now a bit late. The apology should be sincere, and it shouldn’t look forced, Saukkomaa estimates.

Vornanen was brought up separately by the interior minister of fundamental Finns Mari Rantanenwho in his May Day speech had commented on Vornane’s act as the jerk-like action of an individual basic Finn.

– Would it be reasonable for an impartial preliminary investigation to be carried out in the case and it to be heard in court before such a public lynching? Vornanen wrote.

To outsiders, Vornane’s communication may seem like fogging, i.e. an activity in which a person blames others, when one should rather take responsibility for one’s own actions.

– It’s hard to say whether spraying is going on here. Saukkomaa sees that it would have been worthwhile for Vornanen to appear in one of the media, for example, or to invite the media and tell the course of the story from his own point of view.

Saukkomaa believes that Vornanen could have done this, even though the preliminary police investigation is ongoing.

– Of course, there are still opportunities for that, but now this thing has already run with such a huge volume.

Shame

According to Saukkomaa, Vornanen is currently fighting for his remaining reputation. The chairman of the communications agency Tekir would advise Vorna to reveal his entire background about his possible shady dealings at once.

– If I were the main person or a party in the case, I would think hard about the things that have not yet become public. Other things will come up as long as there are enough of them.

Basic Finns are quite burdened by previous cases in which a party member has been fooling around.

Among other things Teuvo Hakkarainen assaulted and forcibly kissed the parliament member of parliament at the Christmas party in 2017.

Saukkomaa admits that Vornane’s case, combined with previous shenanigans and the current position as a large government party, may have caused basic Finns a strong sense of shame, which may appear as silence.

– Basic Finns is a bit of a party with a “single rider” attitude, but in this case many boundaries were crossed. The nature of the events is such that there are no online updates.
