Six people received the virus in Italy itself. These human-to-human infections had not previously occurred in the country. The other persons would have contracted the virus abroad.
Local authorities in northern Italy have canceled all public activities, such as sports competitions, to further reduce the virus outbreak. Offices and schools will also remain closed in the affected regions for the time being.
