Italy registers 71 new deaths and 202 new cases

The number of new deaths related to COVID-19 rose to 71 in Italy, against 79 the day before, announced Wednesday the civil protection agency which recorded 202 new contaminations in 24 hours against 283 the day before.

According to the agency, since the epidemic was reported on February 21, it has killed 34,114 people in the country, placing Italy in fourth position behind the United States, Great Britain and Brazil in terms of deceased. The number of confirmed infections amounts to 235,763, which places Italy in seventh place in the world, behind the United States, Russia, Brazil, Spain, Great Britain and India. The number of people registered as being currently carriers of the disease fell to 31,710, against 32,872 the day before.

Of the 202 new infections recorded on Wednesday, 99 were seen in Lombardy, the Italian region hardest hit by the epidemic. The number of patients hospitalized in intensive care fell to 249 from 263 the previous day, confirming a long-term downward trend. Among the people initially infected, 169,939 were declared recovered against 168,646 the day before. The civil defense agency said that 2.713 million people had been tested as of Wednesday, out of a population of around 60 million.
