Italy. Banksy’s boat saving refugees in the Mediterranean was in danger of sinking | World news

In the vicinity of Malta, there is one sailing under the German flag ³ód¼ rescue Louise Michel financed by a famous British artist with the pseudonym Banksy. At one point, a small vessel had over two hundred migrants on board – it was overloaded and was in danger of sinking. After an appeal for the captain’s help, an Italian coast guard boat sailed from Lampedusa and took over almost 50 people in poor physical condition, mainly women and children.

A Danish tanker, which has taken nearly 30 migrants off the Libyan coast, has been waiting for permission to enter the port for three weeks nearby. A ship of the German non-governmental organization Sea Watch with 200 migrants is also sailing towards Lampedusa.

In the last two days, 40 boats with migrants arrived on the island. There are over a thousand of them out of 190 places in the center for migrants.

Banksy, ship and refugees

The boat, named Louise Michel in honor of the French revolutionist, helps refugees trying to get from North Africa to Europe in the waters of the Mediterranean. There is a crew of ten on board, which set sail on August 18 in secret to avoid the interest of the authorities of the Italian port of Borriana.

Banksy decorated the ship with the image of a girl in a life vest, holding a balloon that looks like a lifebuoy but in the shape of a heart. This is a reference to one of his most famous works – “Little Girl with a Balloon”, which self-destructed just after it was auctioned off for around £ 1 million.
