Mario Draghi explains his intention to retire

The current government has lost the support of most political forces, said Mario Draghi.

Draghi issued a communiqué in which he explained his intention to resign by saying that his government had lost the support of most political forces.

He recalled that in his inaugural speech, he promised that his government would work as long as he had the prospect of fulfilling his own program. According to him, this program has lost the confidence of the majority and disagreements have appeared in the ruling coalition.

“The way the vote went down in parliament today is important from a political point of view. The National Unity Coalition that has supported our government since its inception is no more,” he added.

Draghi noted that “in recent days, I did my best to continue this joint work of ours. In particular, I tried to meet the demands put forward by political forces. But today, the exchange of views and voting in parliament showed that my efforts were insufficient” .

Earlier Thursday it became known that the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaia Callas has retired. She dissolved the current minority government to start forming a new coalition.
