Israel’s Airstrikes on Syria’s Damascus Airport: Two Workers Dead

Jakarta

Syria’s Directorate General of Meteorology said as many as 2 workers died as a result of the bombing Israel towards Syria’s Damascus Airport. The attack was carried out at dawn.

Reported by Reuters, Sunday (22/10/2023), the Directorate General of Meteorology said the two workers who died were employees of the Meteorological Agency which has an office at the airport.

Meanwhile, reported by AFP, attacks Israel It halted services at war-torn Syria’s two main airports. State media quoted a military source as saying that the Transport Ministry said the flight had been diverted to Latakia.

This is the second attack to hit public facilities since the Hamas vs Israel war.

“At around 05.25 (0225 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out… airstrikes… targeting Damascus and Aleppo international airports, leading to the death of a civilian worker at Damascus airport and wounding of others,” a military source said in a statement released by state news agency SANA.

“Material damage to the airport runway makes the airport unable to serve,” the statement added. The transport ministry said the flight was diverted to Latakia airport.

“Military sources said ‘simultaneous’ attacks came ‘from the western Mediterranean direction of Latakia and from the direction of the Syrian Golan,’ according to the statement.

On October 12, simultaneous attacks rendered Damascus and Aleppo airports inoperable, Syria said at the time. Israeli attacks target Aleppo airport, wounding five people and rendering the airport unusable.

During more than a decade of war in Syria, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against its northern neighbor, mainly targeting Iranian-backed forces and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian army positions.

Israel rarely comments on its attacks on Syria, but it has repeatedly said it will not allow its archenemy Iran, which supports President Bashar al-Assad’s government, to expand its presence there.
