Israelis at Risk for Deadly Fungal Infection, Ministry of Health Warns

Jakarta

A number of Israelis have reportedly died from a deadly fungal infection, with fears that the infection is starting to spread to civilians. The Israeli Ministry of Health said the serious injuries suffered by the soldiers had a serious impact on the immune system.

Automatically they are more at risk of contracting a deadly fungal infection.

“This is a phenomenon known to the medical world and also occurs in cases not related to injuries on the battlefield. In cases of serious and complex injuries in the field, the source of infection could be the soil, but this is not a new incident or only related to Gaza, ” said the statement, quoted from the Times of Israel, Friday (29/12/2023).

Reports of one or more injured IDF soldiers being found to have severe infections have the public concerned about the impact on other ground troops, the hostages being held, and Israeli public health.

Prof Nadav Davidovitch, an epidemiologist who heads Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s School of Public Health, said untreatable infections were not a danger to the Israeli public.

According to Davidovitch, the types of antimicrobial-resistant infections that wounded soldiers carry from Gaza are generally not something to worry about. They believe that soldiers experience this because their immune system is weak.

“We’re talking about a soldier who is in the field for weeks or months and then is seriously injured, for example, by an explosion that breaks his bones and skin,” Davidovitch said.

“If he had been lying on contaminated ground, perhaps because of the dirt, his wounds could have become infected. We saw this in previous wars. This is not something new,” he said.
