Is confinement a cause of post-traumatic stress in children? A study launched in Toulouse

Has the period of confinement experienced by France in the past two months caused a wave of post-traumatic stress in children? The strict confinement, observed for eight weeks in order to limit the coronavirus pandemic and protect the most vulnerable, could in fact have had significant psychological consequences, especially among the youngest.

“Following the confinement (…) and the closing of the schools, the children saw their usual routine, their activities, their teaching methods and their social relationships completely changed”, notes the Toulouse University Hospital. “They are also more exposed to large amounts of information about the pandemic through the media and to a high level of stress and anxiety from the adults around them.” Therefore, the hospital is concerned that children will develop symptoms of stress.

To be sure, the Toulouse University Hospital is launching a study, called E-COCCON, in order to “find out if children aged 8 to 15 are showing signs of post-traumatic stress”. If you wish to participate, the establishment has set up a dedicated number: 05.34.55.86.73. It is open to everyone from Monday to Friday. The study, scientifically coordinated by Pr Isabelle Claudet, pediatrician and head of the Children’s Center, will be offered to families “in the form of a telephone questionnaire, lasting approximately 20 minutes”, specifies the CHU.

Other studies have already shown an increase in psychological distress since the start of the health crisis. In mid-May, the United Nations (UN) warned that “The Covid-19 pandemic is now hitting families and communities with more mental stress”, and “even when it is over, grief, anxiety and depression will continue to affect people”. Another international study was launched in early May to assess the impact of containment and the pandemic on the well-being and mental health of the population.
