Iran Threatened to Enter Wave Five of Covid due to Delta Variant

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President Hassan Rouhani admits he is worried Iran will be hit by the fifth wave of the pandemic Covid-19 because of the emergence of the corona virus varian Delta.

“It is feared that we will experience a fifth wave across the country as the Delta variant spreads in the south,” Rouhani said, as quoted by ANTARA on Saturday (3/7).

Currently, Iran is still struggling to contain the spike in Covid-19. With such a high rate of transmission, the number of deaths from Covid-19 in Iran is the highest in the Middle East region.

More than 84,000 people in Iran have died from Covid, while 3.2 million people have been detected as infected with the corona virus.

With this high transmission rate, Iran’s Ministry of Health has included the name of the capital, Tehran, in the red classification, the highest category in the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

Not only that, provinces in southeastern Iran, such as Fars, Hormozgan, Kerma, and Sistan-Baluchistan are also now in the red category.

In the midst of this spike in cases, Iran has difficulty importing Covid-19 vaccines for its 83 million people because the economy is under pressure from various sanctions from the United States.

To date, only 1.7 million people in Iran have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, while another 4.4 people have only been injected once.

To overcome this shortfall, Iran produces two vaccines domestically. Rouhani hopes the vaccination program will be better.

“If God wills, the vaccination situation will improve from next week,” Rouhani said.
