iOS 13.5.1: iPhone users complain about green display

Problems with the software keep coming up with iOS updates. Apps don’t start, iPhone is slow or Bluetooth doesn’t work – these are usually errors that occur. However, the recent problem could be a little more serious because it affects the iPhone screen. The entire display has a marsh green hue – a hardware defect cannot be excluded.

Numerous reports on social media

First reported Macrumors over on Reddit, Twitter and in that Macrumors User Forum there are long threads in which iPhone owners confirm that they are experiencing the problem:

I have been seeing a uniformly green tint on my 11 Pro Max for a few seconds after unlocking the phone. The same is happening with my mother’s phone (11 Pro Max), too. Recently found this thread. Is anyone else experiencing it, too? from r / iphone

Users of the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max seem to be most affected. Occasionally also report IPhone Xs owner and even that meanwhile three year old iPhone X. about the same problem. What these models have in common is the OLED screen. On the other hand, the color cast does not appear to appear on iPhones with an LCD screen (iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 11, iPhone Xr and iPhone 8 and all older iPhones) – at least there are no user comments about these iPhone models.

According to the comments, the problem occurs when updating to iOS versions 13.4, 13.5 and 13.5.1. It also remains with users who have updated to iOS beta 13.5.5.

The problem is different in those affected. While some report that the color cast only occurs at low brightness or only shortly after unlocking, the screen is permanently discolored in others. For some users, however, the tint occurs when the iPhone is in dark mode or night shift is switched on.

Software or hardware failure?

The simplest explanation for the problem would be a software error. However, there are indications that there is more to it than that. Loud Forbes a few affected users took a screenshot and opened the image on another display, where the green color cast was still visible.

Apple Support has already become aware of the problem and has occasionally contacted users on Twitter. In the Macrumors forum, a person affected reports that an Apple-certified repair shop has it Display of his iPhone 11 Pro Max exchanged under guarantee.

As Forbes reports, the green tint could result from a combination of software and hardware bugs. Perhaps we are dealing with a batch of defective OLED displays that are now failing due to changes in iOS. Since the problem persists in the current iOS beta version 13.5.5, it is not known whether it can be fixed by an early software update.
