Neste and Hesburger, the largest fast food restaurant chain in the Baltics and Finland, will enter into significant co-operation in the circular economy. Spent cooking oil from more than 300 Hesburger restaurants in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland will be recycled to produce Neste My renewable diesel.
Hesburger, in turn, will use it in most of its vehicles in Finland, reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% * compared to fossil diesel.
“We reduce emissions by investing in plant protein products and energy efficiency, as well as by planning our deliveries efficiently. Recycling and the circular economy have also been important focal points in the development of our activities, and this cooperation between the circular economy and Neste is perfectly in line with our goals. Every year, our restaurants in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Finland produce up to 420 tons of used cooking oil, which is collected and transported as ecologically as possible. Neste, on the other hand, uses cooking oil and other organic waste and raw material residues to produce renewable diesel for use in Hesburger trucks as well. As the used cooking oil is collected by cars that deliver goods to restaurants, the cooperation will not result in additional mileage, ”says Ieva Salmela, Director of International Development and Marketing at Hesburger.
“Combating climate change requires close cooperation between companies. This cooperation between the circular economy and Hesburger is a concrete example of how cooperation can improve sustainability. At the same time, our climate action adds value to consumers who visit Hesburger restaurants, as the cooking oil used to make their french fries can be used as a feedstock for renewable diesel to reduce transport emissions. In this way, we can give consumers the opportunity to make more responsible daily purchasing decisions in the Baltic region and Finland, ”says Heidi Peltonen, Head of Neste Sustainability Partnerships.
Hesburger vehicles, which will start using Neste renewable diesel, cover about 680,000 kilometers a year. By replacing fossil diesel with Neste renewable diesel, the annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is comparable to the fact that 350 private cars would no longer be driving on Finnish roads in one year.
