A professor who successfully disarmed a teenage girl who during an Idaho college shooting testified on American television.
Without the intervention of this professor, the results would certainly have been much more tragic. In early May, a teenage girl broke into her army Idaho college and injured three people. Two of the victims were injured in the hallway and the third outside. The teacher who intervened testified on American television on Wednesday. Asked on the show “Good Morning America” she said she “just walked towards her and put (her) hand on (her hand)”. “I gently pulled the gun away from her hands and she allowed me,” she explained. Krista Gneiting, math teacher at Rigby Middle School added, “She didn’t give me the gun, but she didn’t do anything to stop me. And then after that, once the gun was taken away, I just hugged her because I thought to myself that it was a little girl whose mom was somewhere and who doesn’t realize she’s in. losing ground and that it can hurt people ”.
Krista Gneiting was in her class when she heard the first shots. She said she went to look down the hall and saw the janitor lying on the floor. After hearing more shots, she announced to her students that they were going to “have to run really fast”. “You won’t be able to look behind you, now it’s time to get up and go,” she told them.
The trauma of past shootings
It was while she was helping an injured student that the teacher crossed paths with the suspect, a sixth grade student. “She was just a little girl and I couldn’t figure it out. I just knew as soon as I saw the weapon that I had to manage to catch it ”. She held the teenager in her arms until the police arrived. “She spoke to me, I understood that she was very unhappy. I kept hugging her and giving her love, trying to make her understand that we were going to go through this together ”. “She’s just starting her life, she just needs help. Everybody makes mistakes. I believe that we have to make sure that she gets help and that she can start loving herself again, so that she can function in society, ”said Krista Gneiting. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office told People magazine that the girl had been charged and taken into custody.
School shootings in the United States are unfortunately not uncommon. The last dates back to April, when several people were injured in a high school in Tennessee. The student suspected of having brought the weapon to the scene was killed by the police. Others have left a deep mark on the United States, such as the Columbine shooting, where two boys opened fire in 1999, killing 12 students and a teacher and injuring 24 others. The country still mourns the deaths of Sandy Hook Primary School, where 20 children were killed in 2012, or the 17 victims of Parkland in 2018.
