Ice hockey: Coronavirus positive, a Biel player tells of his anxiety – News Sports: Hockey

“I’m better, finally, but I still feel quite weak …” breathes Jan Neuenschwander on the phone. Eleven days ago, the 27-year-old Davosian, who has spent the past four seasons at HC Biel, experienced chest pain before experiencing feverish bouts overnight.

“I knew right away that was the coronavirus,” he recalls. It was a shock. I was afraid too, because until then this history of virus seemed still relatively distant. I didn’t know what to expect, exactly what it was going to do to me. So, yes, I was really scared at first because it was really the unknown. ” The medical test performed the next day will confirm that it was indeed covid-19.

In the end, the future player of CP Berne did well, especially since he is among those at risk due to his type 1 diabetes. “The doctors immediately reassured me. This type of diabetes, for a young and healthy person like me, poses no particular risk if one is infected with the coronavirus. ”

The fact remains that the coronavirus is not just a simple flu. “I had a lot of fever, cough and severe aches for the first five or six days. I was having trouble breathing, I felt something was wrong. It was difficult and pretty scary. Then my condition improved and I started to see the end of the tunnel. My girlfriend was also infected, but luckily her symptoms were a little less than mine. She’s getting better too. ”

Second case at HC Biel

Neuenschwander is not the only HC Biel member who has been infected with the coronavirus. His trainer, Antti Törmänen, tested positive on Sunday March 15, one day before Neuenschwander. The previous Thursday, the players and staff of HC Biel had trained one last time before the official cancellation of the hockey season. “Of course I wondered how and where I got this disease, whether it was on the ice or somewhere else. Inevitably, there is a good chance that it was my coach who passed it on to me, “he laughs.

For the past two days, Neuenschwander has no longer had any symptoms of the coronavirus, apart from a few remains of fatigue. “I can’t wait to get moving, go for a walk in the fresh air and do some exercise.”
