The sound of a siren blaring loudly during the day on weekdays.

On December 6, 2023, “runaway cars” crashed into Hitachi City Hall square and Tokai Village Hall in Ibaraki Prefecture in succession, injuring three men and women. Police arrested Yasushi Masuko (53), who was driving the car, on suspicion of damaging a structure. During interrogation, Masuko stated, “My health deteriorated due to the JCO criticality accident (which occurred in 1999).I had a grudge against Tokai Village and Hitachi City.”

A woman who lives in the same apartment as suspect Masuko reveals how he lived before the incident.

“After his father passed away a few years ago, he went to eat meals at his mother’s room, who lived in the same apartment building.It seems that his mother did all the housework, such as cleaning and laundry. I was so sick that I had to call an ambulance dozens of times, and I couldn’t even go to work.”

I don’t have a job and live in an apartment with a rent of about 10,000 yen. On the other hand, an elderly man who lives in the neighborhood says that Mashiko was “blessed.”

“For some reason, he seems to have had money. The car that crashed into the town hall was an Audi, and before that he was driving a Crown. Also, about 10 days before the incident, a man with short hair was sitting in the passenger seat. I saw a beautiful woman in her 40s riding it.I thought it might have been my wife, too, but then I heard people shouting and throwing something from the room.That’s when the incident happened.”

What was the motive that drove him to go “out of control”? The progress of the investigation is awaited.
