Hydration: Essential Tips for Healthy Skin and Choosing the Right Skincare Products

The skin is the largest organ of our body, so we better take good care of it. But how exactly do you do that? How do you know what skin type you have and what type of skincare suits you best? Six useful facts and tips! Hydration is the message

“Planet Earth, our bodies and our body cells have one important thing in common: they all consist of seventy percent water,” says Massaniello Bogaert, communications & training manager at the international skin care and dermatology company. Louis Widmer. “For that reason, hydration is of the utmost importance. Drinking enough water, day in and day out, is the way to keep your skin fresh and healthy and protect it from dehydration. It is also the right tip to stop the age spiral. Although it must be said that your DNA plays an important role: if it decides that you will quickly get wrinkles, there is nothing you can do about it.”

Discover your own skin type

“There are many different skin types, which fall within the spectrum defined by these three major categories: very dry, mixed with oily T-zones that provide a rich structure and very oily. How can you find out what skin type you have? Suppose you cleanse or remove make-up from your skin and experience a very tight feeling, then you either have a lack of moisture or very dry skin. So-called ‘drying lines’ around the lips and/or eyes are usually indications of dry skin. In that case you should always hydrate and nourish well.”

Avoid these ‘skin enemies’

If hydration is the skin’s greatest boon, then dehydration is enemy number one. “So take extra care of your skin if you work in an environment where the air conditioning is on all day. In addition, UV rays are a major risk. You can and should apply sunscreen – with the highest possible factor – but it only works for two hours, so don’t think it will protect you all day. Obvious enemies are smoking, alcohol and fast food. In addition, water with a lot of lime and air pollution can also form an attack on the skin, just like stress.”

As a man, also do skincare

Until the age of 25, our body and therefore also our skin are under construction, but from then on things inevitably go downhill. This of course applies to both women and men. In other words: skincare is crucial for everyone. “Fortunately, we have seen a change in recent years and skincare is no longer mainly associated with women. That is only logical, because men in particular often have oilier T-zones with very active sebaceous glands, which often lead to the well-known black dots. We also see that youth in general are much more concerned with skin care. Maybe even a little too much – think about the balance!”

Apply skincare products correctly

“Especially with day care, we see that people apply the product to their face and then start making circular movements with their fingers. But you should always keep in mind that the muscles of your face are attached to your skin. Therefore, always try to apply the product from the inside out, so that you do not push the muscles inwards and make your skin looser – you just have to patch that muscle. For the same reason, you should apply product to your neck with upward strokes, not downward. The more your muscles are stimulated, the better the result.”

Choose a good skincare product

“If you have dry skin, it’s when choosing it right skincare product It is important to check whether hyaluronic acid is one of the raw materials. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our skin and is known to retain moisture in the dermis, which is the zone where collagen and elastin are found and which make your skin shine. However, the natural amount of hyaluronic acid decreases with age, so it is important to supplement it synthetically. For very dry skin, I recommend paying attention to urea as an ingredient, because this raw material ensures that your skin is intensely nourished.”
