How to Control Cholesterol Levels and Prevent Serious Illnesses

Jakarta

High cholesterol is a condition when cholesterol levels in the blood exceed normal limits. If left unchecked, excessive cholesterol can accumulate in blood vessels to trigger the risk of serious illness, such as heart attack and stroke.

Cholesterol comes from two sources, namely food and the liver. Basically, the body needs cholesterol to carry out several body functions. Cholesterol is divided into two types, namely bad cholesterol or Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and good cholesterol or High Density Lipoprotein (HDL).

LDL works by accumulating cholesterol in the blood vessels so that it can trigger serious complications. That’s why this type of cholesterol is often called ‘bad’ cholesterol. While HDL is in charge of cleaning and removing LDL out towards the liver (liver).

Therefore, it is important to control cholesterol levels in the body. This is because cholesterol in the body can increase suddenly due to several factors. Quoted from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the following are the causes.

The habit of consuming unhealthy foods (high levels of saturated fat), for example egg yolks, butter, biscuits, cheese, cream or coconut milk.

Lack of exercise or activity. Habit of smoking. Consuming too much alcoholic beverages. Obesity. Having certain diseases, such as hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes, underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), liver disease, and kidney disease. Increasing age. As you get older, the risk of high cholesterol which triggers atherosclerosis also increases.
